Caretower provides the latest products of Sophos
This week, Facebook took further steps to secure its users by teaming up with McAfee, Symantec, Trend Micro and Sophos to offer better protection, which is probably good in light of the new Symantec Internet Security Report. Also this week, TEAM and EntropySoft get together for compliance with Oracle email management, while CDS and Tactical get together to offer e-Discovery services.
Facebook Teams Up For Security
Facebook is looking to secure itself and its users. With malware a growing problem across… well, across every kind of IT spectrum available, Facebook has teamed up with Microsoft, McAfee, Symantec, Trend Micro and Sophos to offer protection.
The initiative, which was launched last week, comes in the shape of the Antivirus Marketplace, where users can download free six-month licenses, or full versions of the companies’ anti-malware software for six months to a year, depending on which products they choose.
The companies have also said they will share their URM blacklists, which lists suspicious websites — a list that is also being augmented by its software partners.
On the antivirus marketplace, Facebook explains how it will all work. The blacklist system, which scans trillions of clicks per day, will now incorporate the malicious URL databases from these security companies to augment existing level of protections.
This means that whenever users click a link on our site, you will get Facebook’s existing protections, but also the support of the world’s biggest companies in computer security.
There’s an a lot more to this, which we can’t possibly cover here. Also check out the Security Page.
Symantec, Internet Attacks
It’s probably opportune that Facebook is beefing up security given the recent finding of the Symantec Internet Security Threat Report for last year, which shows that, while the number of vulnerabilities decreased by 20% in 2011, the number of malicious attacks continued to skyrocket, by 81%
The report also highlights the fact that advanced targeted attacks are spreading to organizations of all sizes and variety of personnel, data breaches are increasing, and that attackers are focusing on mobile threats.
In the report, Symantec says it blocked more than 5.5 billion malicious attacks in 2011, an increase of 81% over the previous year. In addition, the number of unique malware variants increased to 403 million and the number of Web attacks blocked per day increased by 36%
For enterprises, targeted attacks are also growing, with the number of daily targeted attacks increasing from 77 per day to 82 per day by the end of 2011.
Mobiles are under attack, too, with the number of possible vulnerabilities increasing by 93% in 2011. At the same time, there was a rise in threats targeting the Android operating system.
Email Compliance and Management for Oracle
Out of Collaborate 12, we also saw new email management for Oracle products that will ensure better compliance for enterprises using Oracle software.
This comes from TEAM Informatics an enterprise software products and systems integration firm, which specializes in Oracle WebCenter. EntropySoft is in there too, as is Integro.
